Situated in Muskoka, Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is a 460 acre sanctuary of natural habitat. Its primary mandate is to rehabilitate animals who find their way to the sanctuary so that they can eventually be returned to their natural habitat. It also provides education to the community about co-existing with wildlife and humane solutions for wildlife-related issues. The size of Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary makes it one of the most unique and important wildlife rehabilitation centres in Ontario.

Volunteering at the Sanctuary comes in many forms, from hands-on work such as wielding hammers building and improving enclosures, and administrative responsibilities such as answering telephones. Volunteers also provide direct animal care by cleaning cages, washing bowls and buckets, shoveling wood shavings, and we have volunteers who help with events and special projects. The list of our volunteer needs goes on and on.  Every job is important, no matter how small.  By helping the full time staff with small chores each little act is monumental because they add up.  Volunteers give the gift of time and allow the full time staff to give more time and attention to the animals that need their care.

Duties

• Complete animal intake and documenting information
• Feeding animals from infant to adult
• Maintain health and feeding records for rehab animals
• Clean and disinfect cages, bowls and buckets
• Clean indoor and outside enclosures and occasionally assist in the maintenance or repair
• Participate in keeping rooms and buildings clean and tidy
• Assist in special events and tours
• Transfer / release animals into the wild

Vaccines needed

• Rabies vaccines are mandatory if volunteering between April through to October and highly recommended from November through to March.  Proof of inoculation is required before arriving at Aspen
• Tetanus is highly recommended
