Kanekiki is a raw vegan farm on the Big Island of Hawaii with nearly 100 varieties of tropical fruit trees. The farm is located in the Puna district of the Big Island. It has ocean access, hiking and some beautiful places to explore with walking distance of the farm. Other tourist attractions in the area include Volcanoes National Park, black sand beaches and viewing of the recent lava flow. Kanekiki is 10 miles from the nearest small town, Pahoa and about 30 miles from Hilo, one of the larger cities on the Island and the city most of the farm visitors fly into.

About the work exchange program

Work exchange positions are opportunities to be more involved in the evolution of Kanekiki. You can experience life in the tropics, working with the land and living in community.

You could work on the following tasks:

• Harvesting
• Machete work
• Domestic work
• Clearing land for planting
• Weeding gardens
• Digging earth and planting trees
• Carrying rocks and removing stumps
• Weed whacking
• Chainsaw work
• Mowing
• Construction work

Work hours last for 4-5 hours a day, four-five days a week. Your work is traded for your accommodation, involvement in community activities and some food from the land. You will need to budget money for additional food during your stay. For those who have never done consistent physical labor, daily farm work can seem strenuous or mundane. Be aware that you could  work with heavy tools as well as some gas-powered and industrial equipment.  All those working on the farm needs to wear suitable work clothes and safety attire.​

Work exchangers are expected to commit to a stay of 3-6 months.

Requirements

• 18 years of age or older
• 5+ years full-time work experience
• Willingness and ability to perform daily physical labor

Five years full-time work experience means 35+ hours a week for five years. This experience does not have to be consecutive, but must equal five or more years.
