Animal refuge volunteer program on the Canary islands, Spain

Animal Academy is a small non-profit animal refuge based in Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands. They rescue and care for abandoned, injured, or mistreated animals, giving them a safe place to heal and recover. The team is dedicated to protecting animal welfare and spreading awareness about responsible pet ownership.

About the free volunteer program

Animal Academy offers a free volunteer program for people who want to help animals in need. Volunteers assist with everyday tasks at the shelter, like feeding the animals, cleaning enclosures, and helping with events or fundraising activities. Before starting, all new volunteers attend a short training session at the refuge to learn how everything works and how to safely support the animals and the team.

Requirements

• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You’ll need to sign a volunteer agreement when you arrive.
• Personal insurance is required.
• You should be comfortable doing physical work when needed.
• Good communication skills and teamwork are important.
• Pets are not allowed at the shelter.
• You’ll need your own transport (car or rental).
• Internet access is necessary for staying in touch before you arrive.

Your responsibilities

• Feeding and caring for the animals.
• Cleaning kennels and general maintenance of the shelter.
• Helping with repairs or improvements to animal enclosures.
• Supporting the team with special events or community activities.
• If you’re doing digital volunteering, tasks may include managing social media, photography, translation, design, or fundraising.
