Haystack Mountain School of Crafts invites applications for its two-week Open Studio Residency, scheduled for September 1–12, 2025. This program is designed to foster artistic exploration at the highest level, offering participants the opportunity to work in a supportive community of makers. Notably, those selected for this highly competitive residency attend free of charge.

About the free studio residency program

The Haystack Open Studio Residency is a unique, fully-funded opportunity for artists, designers, and makers to immerse themselves in creative exploration within a supportive, cross-disciplinary environment. Held at the renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, this two-week residency (September 1–12, 2025) provides access to well-equipped studios in ceramics, fiber, glass, graphics, metals, and wood, as well as a digital fabrication lab. Unlike structured workshops, this program is entirely self-directed, allowing participants to develop their work independently while engaging with a diverse creative community. The residency does not include formal instruction, but studio technicians are available for technical assistance.

Program highlights

This is an open-format residency with no specific work requirements. Participants are encouraged to

  • focus on their own creative projects, either continuing existing work or experimenting with new ideas,
  • collaborate or exchange ideas with fellow residents in an interdisciplinary setting,
  • utilize Haystack’s specialized studios and digital fabrication lab to expand their artistic practice,ú
  • share their process through informal discussions, presentations, or open studio sessions.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Open to artists, designers, craftspeople, and creative professionals across all disciplines.
  • Must be able to work independently and responsibly in a shared studio environment.
  • While no specific project proposal is required, applicants should demonstrate how they will benefit from the residency.
  • Previous experience in a studio setting is recommended, particularly for those working in glassblowing, as no assistants are provided.
