farming work exchange and apprenticeship in Maine

Maine’s Mid-coast is a wonderfully supportive community for local agriculture, so it’s no wonder that owner of the Hatchet Cove Farm Bill Pluecker & Reba Richardson decided to establish their organic farm business there. By running a small-scale organic farm they create an alternative to the corporate food culture that dominates how people eat in the USA. As organic farmers, they believe that the health of both our environment and community are integral to the sustainability of the farm.

Every year three or four full-season apprentices are needed on the farm, as well as one or two short-term volunteers.

Your tasks as an apprentice or volunteer are

  • starting and transplanting seedlings
  • direct seeding in the fields
  • weeding crops by hand and mechanical means
  • care of livestock (dairy cows, pigs, layer hens and broiler chickens)
  • harvesting, washing, and packing produce
  • staffing CSA pick-ups and interacting with members
  • milking and processing the milk from our micro-dairy
  • canning and freezing for the winter
  • other subjects covered if the apprentice is interested include farm bookkeeping, business planning, spinning and working with fiber, soil health management, garden planning, etc.

Room and board are provided, a stipend, and a great learning experience in exchange for hard work and a genuine desire to learn about farming.

The farm is located in Midcoast Maine and are minutes from ponds and the ocean. It is a ten-minute walk through the woods to a secluded lake and a ten-minute ride to the nearest beach. The nearby towns of Rockland and Damariscotta have co-ops, movie theaters and restaurants, as well as the occasional contra dance.

In addition to our full-time apprentices, the farm also welcomes volunteers for two- to twelve-week segments of time. These short-term volunteers receive room and board in exchange for work on the farm.

Guidelines and weekly schedule are available on this link.
