Boston hostel work exchange program

Boston Homestel is a small, cozy, European-style hostel offering short-term rental accommodations near downtown Boston. It operates independently, keeping its lowest rates and rooms off major booking platforms like Hostelworld, Booking, HI, or other multinational corporations. The hostel provides private rooms and manageable family rooms, with a maximum of 4, 3, or 2 people, available in both mixed and female-only dorms. Guests will enjoy a personal experience, distinct from the larger bed and breakfasts or hostels. While the atmosphere is fun and welcoming, it’s not a party house; guests are expected to be mature and responsible during their stay. Boston Homestel offers a work exchange program for those who wish to stay for a month or longer and are interested in gaining insight into the operation of a hostel. Read on for more!

 About the work exchange program

The program offers a work exchange and volunteer opportunity for individuals who wish to stay for a month or longer and are interested in volunteering for shifts in exchange for free or reduced rent. This arrangement covers accommodations only and does not include payment. Below is some general information; interested individuals are encouraged to reach out directly for more details.

The program seeks individuals who genuinely wish to contribute, rather than those looking to complete tasks in a superficial manner just to check them off. If an individual approaches the program with the mindset of doing only the minimum amount of work to stay for free, the arrangement will not be successful. This will become apparent to the team.

Shift Requirements:
The commitment is 7 shifts per week, though if there are enough people, this may be reduced to 6 shifts per week. Since there are 2 shifts per day, an individual may complete all 2 or even 3 shifts in one day, potentially fulfilling the shift requirements in 3-4 days. However, this is subject to the availability of other staff and is not guaranteed to always be possible.

Shift Hours:
There are 3 shifts per day:

  • 9 AM to 1 PM (Typically, no one is scheduled for this shift as a cleaning person is usually assigned)
  • 1 PM to 2 PM – Lunch break
  • 2 PM to 6 PM
  • 6 PM to 10 PM

Hostel Tasks Include:

  • Cleaning: Both inside and outside the hostel (sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces, cleaning restrooms, etc.). A checklist is provided, though it is not exhaustive, as cleaning tasks can vary.
  • Laundry: After check-out at 11 AM, laundry is done as quickly as possible to prepare beds for the next guests.
  • Guest Management: This involves check-ins, check-outs, answering questions, and interacting with guests.
  • Enforcing Guest Etiquette: Ensuring that guests follow the hostel’s rules and maintain courtesy toward others.
  • General Oversight: Checking various areas of the hostel during shifts to ensure everything is in order.
  • Security: Helping to maintain hostel safety by ensuring doors are closed if left open, and other related tasks.
