About the work exchange program
U Street Hostel is a premier traveler hostel located right in the heart of Washington, DC. Work exchangers work alongside a lively team to help keep the facilities clean, organized, and welcoming for travelers visiting the nation’s capital. The experience gives you hands-on training and practical hospitality skills that look great on any resume. It is an ideal environment for English language learners looking to practice their conversation skills in a supportive, international setting.
Shifts run up to 25 hours per week. Initial schedules start at 20 hours per week, working four days from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Following training, an extra 4-hour shift is scheduled by mutual agreement.
A 30-day minimum stay is requested to ensure smooth operations and a stable team environment.
Requirements
- A minimum stay commitment of 30 days.
- High energy, reliability, and the ability to maintain a consistent weekly schedule.
- Enthusiasm for travel, hospitality, and meeting people from diverse backgrounds.
- Openness to basic cleaning tasks and physical housecleaning work.
- Prior experience in customer service or hostels is helpful, but English language learners and first-time volunteers are completely welcome.
Your responsibilities
- Performing daily housekeeping tasks to ensure clean and comfortable dorms, private rooms, and common areas for guests.
- Making beds, changing linens, and maintaining hygiene standards throughout the property.
- Helping keep shared spaces like bathrooms, hallways, and living lounges tidy and presentable.
- Creating a warm, friendly atmosphere for arriving travelers.
