Sea Shepherd works to protect marine wildlife and stop the destruction of ocean habitats. Since 1977, they’ve used bold action to protect the ocean’s biodiversity and enforce conservation laws. Sea Shepherd is looking for volunteers who can commit to at least 3 months to help with their important work. Keep on reading to learn more about how you can get involved.
About the free volunteer program
Sea Shepherd Global is looking for passionate volunteers to join their fleet of ships and help protect the world’s oceans. Volunteers of all backgrounds and skills are needed to defend marine wildlife and combat the threats facing our seas. Volunteers will work aboard Sea Shepherd’s ships on direct-action campaigns to stop illegal fishing, whaling, and environmental destruction.
Sea Shepherd’s fleet is crewed by people from all over the world, with no upper age limit to join. You’ll be part of an international team, where everyone plays an essential role in the mission to protect the oceans.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Know how to swim.
- Agree to Sea Shepherd’s “zero tolerance” drug and smoking policy.
- Be financially responsible for travel to and from the ship, as well as personal items.
- Agree to be filmed or photographed while on campaign.
A minimum 3-month commitment is required for volunteers without specialized skills.
Tasks
- Deckhands to help keep the ship running smoothly.
- Marine Engineers, Navigators, Cooks, and Medics to assist in technical areas.
- Photographers, Videographers, and Communications Specialists to document campaigns.
- Ocean Defenders who are willing to learn new skills and support the mission.
While specialized skills are a plus, Sea Shepherd trains volunteers on board, so no previous ship experience is required.
What’s in it for You?
- Adventure: Experience life at sea, working on real conservation campaigns.
- Fulfillment: Be part of a global team fighting to protect marine life.
- Training: Learn new skills from experienced crew members.
- Room and Board: Accommodation and three vegan meals a day are provided while on board.
How to Apply?
To get involved, visit Sea Sheperd’ website and fill out the application form. You must be ready for the challenges that come with the job, including long hours, hard work, and tough conditions. Volunteers are expected to commit for at least 3 months, especially if they don’t have specialized skills.
