About work exchange program

Words from your host

“The property is located at the base of the Oregon coast range and consists of primarily forestland with pastures, creeks, a pond, springs and much more. The wildlife is abundant with beavers, otters, eagles, osprey, salmon (in the fall in our creek on the property), cougars, deer, elk, and more. We have an amazing paved 21 mile bicycle trail (Banks-Vernonia State Trail) that runs through the middle of the property … so if you are a cycling enthusiast you will be very happy here. We are 3 miles down the bike trail from Stub Stewart State Park. Stub Stewart has a significant mountain biking trail complex, frisbee golf course, and much more. If you don’t have a bike, we can let you use one of ours.

We are located approximately 38 miles from Portland and 50 miles from Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast. We are also 6 miles down the bike trail from the small town of Vernonia which has most everything you need as far as supplies go. Given we are 30 miles to Beaverton-Portland, unless you plan on staying on the property most of the time, you will need to have a car given the limited public transportation out here. We can potentially give you rides into Beaverton periodically, but it would be on our own schedule given we will need to be here to run the business. The best situation is for you to have your own car.

We have the expectation that you will work 25 hours per week (we are somewhat flexible on the schedule).

What’s in it for You?

  • In exchange for the 25 hours of work we will provide you with a nice cabin with bedding (see photo) and high quality ingredients for you to cook your own meals with. The cabin doesn’t have a bathroom or a kitchen.
  • There is a commercial bathroom and shower building available for your use.
  • You will use the food cart as your personal kitchen.
  • We provide you with cooking ingredients so you can cook complete, healthy and great tasting meals for each of your work days. We do not provide beverages or junk food so please plan accordingly.
  • We provide unlimited filtered water that is tested to meet State of Oregon water quality standards. There is room in the refrigerator for any additional food you would like to keep for yourself. The only cell coverage is through AT&T, however we have excellent broadband wifi that will allow you to do wifi calling,

The projects you will work on will involve:

  • maintaining the gardens,
  • cleaning yurts,
  • helping to prepare food in the food cart for events,
  • general cleaning (bathrooms, lodge etc.),
  • assist with workshops (see www.terravidaacademy.com for types of workshop information),
  • building tiny homes,
  • planting trees,
  • watering, and or whatever else needs to be done.

Most of the work is not difficult and is very routine. We will provide complete training and a schedule you can follow. Once you are off and running you will be given freedom to complete most the tasks as you like with little oversight (we will confirm things are getting done properly periodically). If you would like to also work part time in town to earn some extra money, we will do whatever we can to help you find a job. Jobs seem to be fairly easy to come by right now.

Smoking is only allowed in outside designated areas. If drugs and or alcohol are a problem for you to manage please do not contact us. Because we only have room for several helpers, it is very important that we can rely on you to complete your weekly tasks on a consistent and dependable basis. Thank you in advance for your understanding with our policy. Smoking pot, drinking alcohol or taking drugs during working hours is not allowed under any circumstance due to safety considerations.

If you are traveling from another country, please make sure you have your travel visa for travel to the U.S. already approved before contacting us. We are not able to help you in getting your travel visa or work visa.

We will need to meet with you via a video call initially to make sure we are a good match for each other. If you are relatively close by, please set up a time to come by for a tour and so we can talk about the opportunity in person. All stays begin with a one-week trial to confirm both parties are satisfied with the arrangements. We have never had anyone not stay after the first week … but we think it is wise for both parties to have this option 🙂

We look forward to hearing from you!”
