About the volunteer program

Dharamsala Animal Rescue (DAR) is excited to offer meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals passionate about animal welfare. Located in the beautiful hills of Himachal Pradesh, DAR invites volunteers to help with the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of animals in need. Volunteers, both medical and non-medical, are welcome year-round to assist in a variety of roles and contribute to DAR’s mission of improving the lives of animals in the region.

Available volunteer positions and responsibilities

Animal Care and Welfare

  • Take the inpatient dogs for walks.
  • Grooming: Bathe and brush dogs.
  • Clean and care for dogs’ eyes and ears (using cotton wool and water).
  • Alert staff to any signs of fleas, worms, weight loss, fur loss, or cuts.
  • Take dogs on hikes in the afternoon.
  • Ensure water bowls are regularly cleaned and refilled.
  • Train dogs to follow basic commands like sit, stay, and lie down.
  • Prepare food and assist with feeding.
  • Ensure all dogs in cages have clean, dry bedding.
  • Assist with basic medical treatments, such as changing dressings or administering fluids.

Fundraising and outreach

  • Take photos and videos for promotional content.
  • Write blog posts for the DAR website.
  • Create and manage a fundraising page for DAR.
  • Share DAR’s posts on social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn).
  • Organize fundraising events in local businesses or cafes.
  • Assist with the 10-Day Rabies Vaccination and Awareness Camp.

General and office support

  • Help with daily cleaning tasks, such as sweeping, mopping, and picking up waste.
  • Wash blankets and ensure they are properly dried.
  • Make tea (chai) for the staff.
  • Assist with administrative duties like printing forms, data entry, stock counting, and writing thank-you notes.

Veterinary volunteer (medical volunteers)

  • Assist with sterilization procedures.
  • Work alongside the veterinary team to diagnose and treat animals.
  • Follow the clinic’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Gain hands-on experience in animal care and learn new veterinary techniques.
  • Help with any additional tasks as required by the veterinary team.

Volunteer Requirements

For Non-Medical Volunteers

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Commit to volunteering for at least 2 weeks
  • Work hours: 9:30 am – 5 pm, Monday – Saturday
  • Respect all animals, staff, and working hours
  • Willingness to perform various tasks as assigned

For Medical Volunteers

  • Must have completed a minimum of 3 years of veterinary school
  • Commit to volunteering for at least 2 weeks
  • Work hours: 9:30 am – 5 pm, Monday – Saturday
  • Must adhere to the working hours and respect the team
  • A WVS Certificate is beneficial but not required
