Bodhisattva Kadampa Meditation Centre (KMC), based in Brighton, is a special place of tranquility, rest and reflection. Bodhisattva KMC is part of the New Kadampa Tradition, the International Kadampa Buddhist Union, and is home to an international Kadampa Buddhist community who share a wish to make their lives meaningful by finding lasting peace and happiness from within and helping others to do the same.
The Meditation Centre is open to the public and offers a variety of meditation & mindfulness classes, in depth Buddhist study programmes, day courses, and weekend meditation retreats that are suitable for beginners and more experienced meditators. For those attending the weekend courses comfortable single, twin, and dormitory accommodation are offered.
Peace Garden & location – The Centre is located within two acres of quiet leafy grounds and is a haven of peace in the city of Brighton. It’s just a few minutes walk from local parks and the sea front.
World Peace Cafe offers a delicious range of home-made vegetarian dishes, including quiches, salads and heart-warming soups, as well as freshly ground coffee and yummy cake.
There is also a gift and bookshop onsite; selling souvenirs, gifts, greetings cards, Buddhist books, and meditation CDs.
About the working visitor and volunteer program
Bodhisattva Centre is a Grade 2* Listed Building located in the city of Brighton & Hove in East Sussex, just south of London. It is situated in 2 acres of gardens several kilometres from the shores of the English Channel. It provides a quiet and reflective environment for a meaningful break.
The work is varied and could include
- Cooking and/or serving in the café
- Office work
- Decorating etc.
- There are various building projects also on the go at any one time that you could get involved in.
If you have any specific skills you may be able to offer you are also welcome to apply. Although the work is not always strenuous you will need to be reasonably fit and active to come on a working visit.
Sundays and Mondays are free days, so an ideal time to explore the city and beach of Brighton & Hove which are within walking distance; as well as the surrounding countryside of the South Downs and coastline. London is an hour’s train journey away. Or just relax in the friendly atmosphere of the Centre and Peace Garden.
The Spiritual Programme
As a working visitor you are welcome to take part in the spiritual activities at Bodhisattva Centre. In the evenings you can attend General Programme classes on Buddhist thought and meditation or you can attend daily morning prayers. These classes are all free to working visitors. They also hold regular weekend courses which can be attended by arrangement. Please note there are no classes during our term breaks.
About the costs
Seven days free dormitory accommodation and three vegetarian meals a day in exchange for 35 hours of work (usually spread over five days) will be provided to every participant. Working visits are usually offered for one week but can be extended for special projects. Working visits MUST be booked in advance.
Food and accommodation
All meals are vegetarian including eggs and dairy products or vegan. They offer comfortable dormitory accommodation – all you need to do is bring a sleeping bag, and if possible, work clothes and boots.
Please note: Since Bodhisattva Centre is a Buddhist Centre, visitors are asked not to drink alcohol or smoke on the premises as well as not to play musical instruments or sound systems on the property.
Longer term working visits for the World Peace Cafe
Longer term working visits for the World Peace Cafe are aslo available where wthe center will provide accommodation and three vegetarian meals a day in exchange for 35 hours of work a week (usually spread over five days). Working visits can be from one week to several months in duration. As a working visitor you will receive comfortable dormitory accommodation – all you need to do is bring a sleeping bag. You would be welcome to take part in the spiritual activities at Bodhisattva Centre. In the evenings you can attend themeditation classes on Buddhist thought and meditation or you can attend daily prayers in one of our two beautiful meditation rooms.
