Mountain retreat center work exchange program in New Mexico

New Mexico free volunteer program in a retreat center

Vallecitos Mountain Retreat Center is located in the scenic Tusas Mountains, surrounded by abundant wildlife, alpine meadows, ponds, ponderosa pines, and aspen groves. This 135-acre private retreat is nestled within 300,000 acres of National Forest and serves as a wildlife refuge, home to elk, deer, bears, beavers, wild horses, eagles, and over 60 species of birds. The Vallecitos River, which runs through the center, is federally protected. The retreat features trails that offer guests a unique chance to immerse themselves in nature.

In addition to its natural beauty, the center offers a volunteer program with a minimum stay of two weeks, though longer stays are welcome. Volunteers can assist with maintaining the facilities and supporting retreatants, gaining the opportunity to experience the retreat’s peaceful surroundings while contributing to its upkeep.

About the free volunteer program

Vallecitos Mountain Retreat Center offers a volunteer program where participants play a vital role in the upkeep and enhancement of the retreat. Volunteers will support daily operations and maintain the retreat’s facilities while enjoying the serene beauty of northern New Mexico. The program is available from May 1st to October 31st, with a minimum commitment of two weeks, though a four-week stay is preferred.

Volunteer Tasks

Volunteers are needed in two key areas:

  • Retreat Volunteers: Working alongside the Retreat Manager, volunteers will assist with daily chores, including cleaning, sorting laundry, helping in the kitchen, supporting retreatants, and transporting guests.

  • Facility Volunteers: Working with the Facilities Manager, volunteers will engage in maintenance tasks such as fixing fences, managing irrigation systems, gathering firewood, and maintaining trails.

Requirements

To be eligible for this volunteer opportunity, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Availability for at least two weeks between May 1st and October 31st (preference for four weeks).
  • Ability to work in a remote, high-altitude area with limited access to medical services.
  • Physical capability to walk over a mile each day, navigate uneven terrain, and lift up to 30lbs.
  • Comfort without electricity or cell service.
  • Willingness to leave pets at home.
  • A valid driver’s license and two references from individuals familiar with the applicant’s work or capabilities.

What’s in It for You?

Volunteers will experience one of New Mexico’s most beautiful and remote landscapes, with the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals. Meals include three delicious vegetarian dishes daily. Accommodations are comfortable, single-occupancy, and heated (though without electricity). After completing a month of service, volunteers may have the chance to join a retreat, space permitting.

How to Apply

If the above requirements align with your abilities, submit a Volunteer Application here. Vallecitos schedules volunteers for the entire season early each year, so it’s best to apply between December and March. Please submit a new application each year to confirm your interest in returning.

Volunteers are essential to the success of Vallecitos Mountain Retreat Center, and your willingness to contribute is greatly appreciated.
