Open Gate Hostel – On the Lava, Off the Grid

Located on Hawaii’s Big Island, Open Gate Hostel offers a rare chance to live and volunteer on the edge of a lava field in an off-grid, eco-conscious environment. Volunteers are invited to join this vibrant and international community for a 4–6 week stay, contributing 24 hours per week in a variety of roles that support the day-to-day magic of this unique hostel.

This opportunity is ideal for those with a background or strong interest in hospitality, guest services, or general maintenance—and for anyone who dreams of island life with purpose and adventure.

Requirements

• Minimum commitment of 4 weeks (up to 6)
• 24 hours of volunteering per week
• Experience or strong interest in hospitality, maintenance, or guest care
• Positive attitude and a sense of community
• Adaptability to off-grid, eco-living (solar power, rainwater systems, etc.)

Responsibilities

As an allrounder, you’ll support multiple areas of hostel life, including:

• Housekeeping and general cleaning
• Reception duties and welcoming guests
• Light gardening and painting
• Basic repairs and maintenance tasks
• Preparing and serving breakfast
• Helping organize guest activities and social events
