Nestled on the doorstep of Mt Wellington National Park in Tasmania Longley Organic Farm is a variable cropping microfarm, community resource and skill sharing hub that aims to develop regenerative micro-farming both locally and internationally. For those looking to gain hands-on experience, Longley Organic Farm offers a unique work exchange opportunity. Learn practical skills in regenerative agriculture while contributing to a farm that values sustainability, education, and community.
About the work exchange program
Longley Organic Farm has over 100 actively producing garden beds, on a rotational basis, hot houses, seed saving, large Blueberry orchard, Farm Gate Shop and is the largest, most comprehensive supplier of machinery, seeds and equipment for Micro Farming in Australia.
Longley Organic Farm offers a hands-on learning experience in regenerative micro-farming. Work exchangers have the chance to develop practical farming skills while being part of a welcoming community. The farm provides a supportive environment where participants can connect with nature, gain valuable agricultural knowledge, and meet like-minded people from around the world.
Your responsibilities
- Harvesting and preparing vegetables for sale, such as salad mixes, berries, and seasonal produce.
- Seeding vegetable trays for the glasshouse heat beds and transplanting plants into garden beds.
- Helping with jam-making and food preservation.
- Managing composting worms and creating nutrient-rich compost.
- Learning and applying organic and regenerative market gardening techniques.
Work hours are generally from 8:00–8:30 AM to 3:00–3:30 PM on weekdays, with a one-hour lunch break. If you wish to take time off for travel you can do so with advance notice.
Requirements
- A willingness to learn and contribute to farm life.
- Adaptability, as farm tasks can vary daily.
- Ability to work in different weather conditions.
- Please, bring warm clothing, especially between May and September.
- A minimum stay of one week (trial period) is required.
