About the work exchange program
This 26-acre organic and regenerative farm, located 20 minutes north of Santa Cruz on the Pacific coast, was once a strawberry U-Pick but is now a center for permaculture education. The farm currently features 7 acres of berries, 1/3 acre of kiwis, 2 acres of mixed vegetables, and 1 acre of flowers and perennials. It offers a stunning ocean view, with access to Ano Nuevo Creek and is a 10-minute walk from the beach. Entering its second CSA season, the farm is expanding to grow 2.5 acres of vegetables, flowers, and an extensive permaculture food forest.
Though the farm is in the early stages of development, it provides an ideal learning environment for those interested in starting a farm. With no permanent residents, the farm offers WWOOFers basic amenities like WiFi, potable water, an outdoor shower, and a modest kitchen setup, but WWOOFers must provide their own tents. A nearby resort offers additional facilities.
The farm work varies seasonally, including:
- composting,
- planting,
- harvesting,
- pest management,
- irrigation,
- food processing,
- and infrastructure development.
WWOOFers also engage in permaculture practices, watershed regeneration, and natural building, gaining valuable hands-on experience in sustainable farming and market gardening.
The flexible schedule allows WWOOFers to work alongside interns on Fridays and volunteers on weekends. A typical day includes harvesting for the CSA, weeding, and setting up irrigation, with time to relax at the beach or join a potluck.
