Protect one of the UK’s most important seabird sites in Northern Scotland

Scotland wildlife protection long-term volunteer program

Located on a remote island off the northwest coast of Scotland, this volunteer ranger role is based in a place of dramatic cliffs, white sandy beaches, and huge seabird colonies. The island is home to around 100,000 breeding seabirds, so wildlife is part of everyday life. Volunteers live on site in shared accommodation and work closely with a small, friendly team. Daily tasks include helping monitor seabirds, welcoming visitors, and looking after the reserve. Life on the island is simple, active, and closely connected to nature. It is a great chance to gain real ranger experience in a truly wild setting.

The long-term volunteer program of the Scottish Wildlife Trust takes place on Handa Island, a remote wildlife reserve off the northwest coast of Scotland. Volunteers join the island’s ranger team for an extended stay, helping to protect one of the UK’s most important seabird sites.

The island is home to huge breeding colonies of species such as guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and fulmars, as well as dramatic cliffs and unspoiled beaches. Living on the island means being fully immersed in nature, working in a small, close knit team, and sharing daily life in simple accommodation. These placements are widely recognised as valuable field experience and are ideal for anyone looking to build practical conservation and ranger skills.
