Retreat work exchange program in Wales, the UK

Nestled in the serene countryside on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales, Tirylan House retreat centre offers a peaceful sanctuary for personal and spiritual growth. In line with its vision, the centre is developing an agroforestry system, including a forest garden to eventually provide food, while also enhancing biodiversity with native tree plantings. The centre follows a vegan lifestyle, with no animals on site. It also offers work exchange opportunities, inviting individuals to contribute to its unique environment.

About the work exchange program

The retreat centre offers work exchange opportunities where participants can engage in activities such as planting, harvesting, mulching, creating paths, and maintaining the land. Starting in 2025, work exchangers will have the chance to experience a more structured working retreat, with dedicated time for both garden activities and spiritual practices like meditation, study, and the arts.

A typical day includes meditation, communal meals, and about four hours of work in the forest garden, followed by time for creative practices in the evening. This is a perfect opportunity for those seeking a quiet, secluded environment to deepen their practice while contributing to a meaningful agroforestry project. Participants are encouraged to come for one or two weeks, with flexible arrival and departure dates in 2025. The centre is alcohol- and drug-free, and a willingness to engage in communal meals and activities is essential.

Stay for one or two weeks, arriving and leaving on these dates:

  • 6th-13th-20th Jan,
  • 3rd-10th-17th Mar,
  • 16th-23rd Apr,
  • 12th-19th May,
  • and 2nd-9th-16th Jun.

The co-owners of the centre both have a background in teaching, philosophy and Buddhist practice. Robert is a writer of books on practical philosophy (Middle Way Philosophy), and Viryanaya contributes to many Buddhist activities. Viryanaya’s development of vegan cooking, increasingly using forest garden ingredients, is often appreciated.
