About the work exchange program

Anam Cara Homestead’s work exchange program invites  you to contribute to daily life on a working homestead in the mountains of the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia. You’ll join a small group living closely with the land, helping with important tasks that keep the homestead thriving while enjoying accommodation and meals included in your stay. The rhythm of the week reflects a balance of shared work, community connection, and free time to explore the beautiful bushland setting. Work exchangers usually start with a one or two week stay and, if it feels like a good fit, may extend up to twelve weeks. Workdays run around 5 to 6 hours across five days each week and integrate you into the welcoming homestead life. This experience is ideal for people who enjoy hands-on work, community living, and being immersed in nature.

Requirements

• Willingness to live in a communal environment and participate in group rhythms.
• Ability to work 5 to 6 hours a day on varied tasks.
• Bring appropriate clothing and gear for outdoor, farm-style work.
• Be flexible and open to different work assignments as needed.

Your responsibilities

• Help prepare and cook meals for the community several days a week.
• Garden in vegetable plots, orchards, food forests, and ornamental areas using permaculture and organic principles.
• Care for selected animals with day and seasonal routines.
• Assist with maintenance tasks around buildings and homestead land.
• Participate in scheduled Karma Yoga work cycles that structure the week.
