About the free work trade program

The Wilson Creek Gardens Apprenticeship Program is a unique opportunity to deepen your homesteading and sustainable living skills in a beautiful Pacific Northwest setting. This program is heavily rooted in self-directed learning, allowing you to tailor your experience to your interests while gaining hands-on experience with permaculture and garden systems. You will join a small, intentional community where curiosity, enthusiasm and a proactive attitude are valued. The program combines practical work, research, and personal development in a peaceful natural environment.

Opportunities include:

  • designing your own course of study in any aspect of permaculture,
  • experiencing multiple learning situations, from practical hands-on projects to academic research,
  • assisting with the development of permaculture-based systems at Wilson Creek Gardens,
  • planning for life after the apprenticeship, exploring possibilities for meaningful work,
  • attending courses held on site.

Requirements

Proactive individuals with a positive attitude are welcome to apply. While prior experience is not required, applicants will benefit from a basic understanding of:

  • permaculture principles,
  • organic gardening techniques,
  • construction or hands-on building skills.

Other expectations:

  • Comfortable living in rustic or shared spaces with limited conveniences.
  • Willingness to engage in outdoor work and self-directed learning.
  • Commitment to approximately 28 hours per week (10 hours of direct study plus 18 hours on WCG projects).

Your responsibilities

  • Define personal learning goals, set milestones, and receive guidance and feedback.
  • Conduct research and documentation on areas of interest in permaculture and whole systems design.
  • Participate in hands-on projects including gardening, building, and system maintenance.
  • Check in on your well-being and collaborate with others in the community.
