Trail maintenance and conservation work exchange in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Living and volunteering in St. John provides a rare opportunity to trade hands-on conservation work for an unforgettable tropical getaway. It is an adventurous and rewarding way to explore the local culture, protect natural resources, and meet fellow travelers.

About the free work exchange program

Friends of Virgin Islands National Park coordinates a rewarding seasonal work exchange program running from March through May on the island of St. John. The initiative centers on protecting and preserving the natural and cultural resources of the Virgin Islands National Park while connecting visitors directly to the landscape through hands-on service, education, and advocacy. Volunteers live right at the Cinnamon Bay volunteer camp, situated just a three minute walk from a breathtaking white sand beach ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Living at the camp offers an authentic outdoor experience where participants learn to be resourceful, adaptable, and resilient amidst unique tropical conditions. The campground features shared amenities including propane stoves, grills, kitchenware, picnic tables, coolers, drinking water, showers, toilets, and kitchen sinks, with weekly supply trips organized to Cruz Bay.

  • Every volunteer must bring proper gear, including closed toed shoes, a day pack, sun protection, long pants, a mask, and the capacity to carry a minimum of 3 liters of water.
  • Work exchangers are responsible for funding their own airfare and food expenses.
  • Participants are encouraged to make a 100 dollar per week donation to help offset the operating costs of the volunteer camp.
