Spend three unforgettable weeks working outdoors in a remote mountain valley in South Iceland, where glaciers, rivers, and dramatic landscapes shape everyday life. Volunteers stay at a simple campsite and work side by side with people from different countries on trail building and nature conservation projects. No previous experience is required, just a good level of fitness and a love for being outside in changing weather. Days are active and hands-on, with plenty of time to take in the raw beauty of the surrounding highlands. Food, accommodation, and local transport are provided, making it easy to fully enjoy life in one of Iceland’s most striking regions.
About the free volunteer program
Application deadline: February 15, 2026!
Trail Team Iceland offers a three-week volunteer program focused on trail work and nature conservation in the Icelandic Highlands. The placements take place in remote mountain areas of South Iceland, surrounded by glaciers, rivers, volcanic terrain, and wide open landscapes. Volunteers live together at a basic campsite close to the work area, creating a strong sense of community and shared outdoor life.
The program centers on building and maintaining hiking trails that help protect fragile ecosystems and improve access for visitors. Workdays are active and fully outdoors, with weather conditions that can change quickly and are typical for Iceland. No previous experience in trail work is required, as training and daily guidance are provided by experienced team leaders. The experience is well suited for people who enjoy physical activity, meaningful conservation work, and life far away from cities.
