About the work exchange program

At the Dharmakaya Center for Wellbeing, volunteers have the chance to take what they learn in meditation and apply it to everyday life. As part of the Resident Volunteer Staff Program, they help out around 30 hours a week in exchange for free room and board. Volunteers live on-site, work side by side with experienced practitioners, and help keep the center running smoothly. It’s a chance to be part of a peaceful, supportive community guided by Tibetan Buddhist principles.

Requirements

  • Applicants should be at least 18 years old, able to work in close‑knit community life, and physically and mentally fit for manual labor
  • . A basic meditation practice or a sincere intention to cultivate one is expected, along with punctuality, flexibility, resilience, and a respectful, team‑oriented attitude.
  • Volunteers must agree to the Center’s code of conduct, which emphasizes respect, honesty, and compassion, and must abstain from meat, alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs during their stay,

Your responsibilities

  • Kitchen duties: food prep, pantry organization, dishwashing, and serving meals.
  • Housekeeping: bedroom and bathroom cleaning, laundry, floor and window washing.
  • Facilities and grounds: gardening, trail upkeep, tree care, snow removal, and light maintenance work.
  • Volunteers might also assist with retreat programs or special projects. Tasks usually involve physical labor—lifting (up to ~50 lbs), bending, and long periods of standing or repetitive motion—so physical fitness is important.
