Bird sanctuary Michigan, work exchange programSeney National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1935 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. The Refuge is located in the east-central portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, halfway between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The 95,238 acre refuge encompasses the 25,150 acre Seney Wilderness Area, which contains the Strangmoor Bog National Natural Landmark.

Each year the Seney National Wildlife Refuge hosts one to three residential volunteers. These volunteers are invited to lodge on the refuge, free of charge, in their camper or recreational vehicle for a few weeks or a few months. In turn, the volunteers are required to work 20 to 40 hours per week for the duration of their stay.

The residential volunteers wear many hats while working at the refuge over the summer. Volunteers are expected to work 20 to 40 hours each week in exchange for a place to stay. The refuge has several camping pads with full hook-ups to accommodate the volunteer’s needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Volunteers sort and deliver recyclables to appropriate collection points.
  • Work one or two shifts at the Visitor Center Front Desk per week.
  • Assist with maintenance.
  • Helps with other areas as assigned according to personal skills and interests.

Qualifications

  • If a refuge vehicle is used, you must take an online Defensive Driving Training course either prior to your arrival or once you are at the refuge – free of charge.
  • Basic knowledge of nature and the environment.
  • A pleasant manner, ability to get along with many different personalities, patience, problem-solving ability, and dependability.
  • General maintenance knowledge is needed.
  • Specific training may be needed to operate certain machines.
  • An annual computer security class and computer clearance are needed to access government computers.
