About the program
The Kahuai Institute invites volunteers to join a long-term living and working project on a beautiful 15-acre off-grid property on the North Shore of Maui. The property features oceanfront cliffs, jungle trails, lush Hawaiian vegetation, fresh-water pools and nearby waterfalls. The Institute operates as an ecological retreat and community space, with a mission to live simply and sustainably, restore and care for the land, and share resources in a communal setting.
Requirements
- A minimum commitment of three months, with the possibility to stay longer if desired.
- Willingness to live in shared community housing and respect communal living practices.
- Readiness to do hands-on work: participants should be comfortable with physical tasks and willing to work cooperatively with others.
Your responsibilities
- Gardening, planting and tending to fruit, vegetable or herb gardens, soil care and composting.
- Trail and grounds maintenance, landscaping, and general upkeep of the property.
- Small repair work, simple carpentry or building maintenance if needed.
- Animal care or upkeep (for example tending to chickens or bees), depending on need and volunteer skills.
- Supporting communal living by helping with shared chores, meals or community upkeep when required.
