Program details

Heartland Farm is an 80-acre farm located in the central plains crossroads of Kansas, USA. Since the beginning of Heartland Farm, the land has been managed organically. The gardens provide wholesome food for the community as well as produce that is offered at the local farmers’ markets. They currently manage four gardens including – a high tunnel – and are dedicated to continue to expand the network of garden clientele and impact the local food systems.

While organic agriculture is sometimes defined by what is not used – chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides – it is much more than that. Agriculture always relies on soil – and all the intricate life systems within it – for its foundational health and productivity. By building soils with compost, growing cover crops and incorporating other complementary techniques, organic agriculture develops and retains the soil’s sustainable capacity. In so doing the crops produced promote the vitality and health of those who consume them and continue to benefit the land and all the interconnected ecosystems within which they flourish.

Since the beginning of Heartland Farm, the land has been managed organically. The Farm’s gardens have been central to our sustainable living. The gardens provide wholesome food for ourselves and our guests as well as produce that is offered at our local farmers’ markets. We currently manage four gardens including – a high tunnel – and are dedicated to continue to expand our network of garden clientele and impact our local food systems.

Heartland Farm offers volunteers and interns hands-on opportunities to learn about organic gardening.

Agriculture Internship

Focus: Sustainable, small-scale vegetable production

Length: 3-12 Months (Negotiable)

Location: Heartland Farm, Rush County, Kansas

Duties: Forty hours of garden/farm work per week, cooking lunch approximately once every other week, and additional hours as needed for representing Heartland Farm at the Farmer’s Market.

Compensation: Free private room and board with shared common space and $25 per week for personal groceries/expenses, as well as access to farm produce as available.

Volunteering

Volunteers are needed all year round for various amounts of time; however, like most farms they need the most help from April through October.

What’s in it for you?

  • Training for those new to gardening
  • Hands-on animal husbandry training
  • Free attendance at our programs and workshops (if space is available)
  • Free room and board in exchange for 20 to 40 hours of work per week (varies depending on time of year)
  • Grocery money so that you may purchase food you prefer (for volunteers staying longer than a week)
  • Transportation to and from town weekly arranged by staff (for volunteers with no other transportation)
  • Opportunities to enjoy many of the amenities Heartland Farm has to offer

Volunteers stay in a space with two apartments that have individual kitchens, shared bathrooms, a larger community room and community kitchen.

The Farm hosts a community lunch (for those staying at the farm) each weekday at noon (vegetarian diets accommodated – please be sure to let them know of any food allergies). You will be provided with other groceries, or a way to get your own groceries, for morning and evening meals and weekends.

Washing machines and clothes lines for drying are available as often as needed.

A weekly farm meeting is held each Monday at 1 pm to discuss the cooking schedule and work needs for the week ahead.

Because the Farm is already home to a few human-loving dogs, outside pets (specifically pets of volunteers) cannot be accommodated. Non-Farm pets are not allowed in any of our buildings. (Please note that while farm dogs are friendly, they are quite territorial and not welcoming to other animals.)
