Work exchange on an organic farm in Italy

Località il Piano is a family-owned working organic farm located in the Appennine mountains of central Italy, in the Region of Umbria and Province of Perugia, a couple hours northeast of Rome. The farm consists of roughly 35 hectares of mountainous terrai with woods, orchards, vineyards and pastures and some livestock. The farm is also an educational place, where guest can learn about organic farming and permaculture. Agritourism plays an important role on the farm, there are 2 apartments available for visitors throughout the year.

About the work exchange & volunteer opportunity

The farm offers hands-on experience in a wide variety of farm chores. It is an amazing experience for people passionate about agriculture and food. No previous experience in agriculture is necessary, just an open mind, willing body, enthusiasm and curiosity.

One week minimum stay is desired, but many volunteers stay for 2 weeks at least. It’s important to be in good physical condition and to enjoy working outdoors. Sometimes you will work together in the fields and sometimes you will work alone, so you need to be independent and a team player as well. Most of the time 2-3 work exchangers stay on the farm, but you might find more fellow volunteers in the peak season.

Your main tasks would be:

  • orchard maintenance
  • weeding
  • animal care
  • fence maintenance,
  • clearing brush
  • moving rocks
  • stacking hay bales
  • irrigating the fruit trees
  • rotating the animals though the pastures
  • weeding
  • digging irrigation trenches
  • harvesting vegetables
  • harvesting fruit and jam making
  • pick grapes and olives
  • cut and stack firewood

Farm work is mostly outdoors, manual, and is often physically challenging, You’ll be helping on the farm for 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, so expect to get tired:)!

Accommodation and food

There is a very large apartment in the basement of the farmhouse with its own bathroom and a kitchen space. Accommodations are simple but decent, just like in a youth hostel. Mostly vegetarian meals are provided, if you have any special needs regarding food please inform your host in advance.

About the internship

Specialized head interns needed for the coming season to help with either animal care or veg/fruit crops who will be on farm for a mimimum of 3 months between April and November, and will intensively get into farming and gain hands-on practical experience. The head interns will work alongside the farm owners learning, then gradually take near-complete responsibility for a wide variety of farm tasks. This is a great opportunity for someone who already has a basic level of experience with animals or crops to jump up a level and to gain the practical experience necessary to start their own dairy or market garden!
