The Place is a beautiful remote riverside farm in the magical untouched heart of the Klein Karoo semi-arid region of South Africa. It’s a retreat for artists and nature lovers, on an organic permaculture small-holding. The farm is 100ha, and beyond the land you will find large open spaces, hills and small cliffs, riverine thicket, rock formations, fossils and beautiful views of the distant mountain ranges. The farm also has two modern self catering units, both with braai facilities and indoor fire places.
About the work exchange & volunteering program
The Place guest farm is situated in a secluded valley, near Route 62 in the Klein Karoo valley, 325km from Cape Town. It’s surrounded by nature with breath-taking views all around. You could enjoy the silence and beauty that the Klein Karoo valley has to offer, go for a hike or mountain bike tour and explore the region’s cute little towns such as Ladismith, Barrydale, Vanwyksdorp and Calitzdorp.
Your tasks would be the following
Work ranges from heavy to light work like
- fieldwork (clearing, levelling, shifting soil and sand, digging holes for instance),
- building or renovation,
- hiking trailand road maintenance and clearing,
- compost making and chopping wood,
- cleaning of guest cottages,
- looking after the chickens,
- helping in the kitchen,
- harvesting and processing veggies,
- gardening.
Volunteers should to be able to work independently and be comfortable with the remoteness of the farm loaction. You will be asked to help 6 hours per day 6 days a week, so there’s time for you to meditate, read, study and explore the farm. Meal preparation and eating will be together with your host.
Requirements
The ideal volunteer is
- an outdoorsy type,
- at leasdt 24 years old,
- with practical experience.
About the accommodation
Your accommodation will be a comfortable room attached to the house which sleeps two or a sheltered campsite near the house. The bathroom is in the main house and is shared.
You’ll need a valid TOURIST visa for South Africa, appropriate travel and health insurance.
