Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts provides artists with time and space to explore ideas with clay. Through artist residencies, workshops, exhibitions, artist talks and events, we serve the local, national and international clay communities.

Watershed offers several volunteer opportunities during the spring, summer and fall months. Annually, during the last two weeks of May, a crew of dedicated volunteers trade labor for time and space at Watershed. In exchange for free studio access, room and board, a small group of volunteer artists work approximately six hours each weekday for Watershed. Work includes repairing and cleaning studios and equipment, landscape and grounds maintenance, and cleaning residential building interiors and exteriors. Evenings are free for studio time or for exploring midcoast Maine.

Watershed works with volunteers to provide jobs that are appropriate for their level of experience and interests. Teamwork and collegiality are extremely important to the success of Pre-session. Volunteers should be aware that most tasks require physical exertion and/or exposure to nature and the elements. Volunteers should come prepared to work outdoors in all kinds of weather. Specialized skills such as carpentry and general building maintenance, grounds keeping, and cleaning are highly desirable.
