Wildlife sancturay South Africa

The South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) consisting of Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and The Jukani are winners of the Lilizela Service Excellence Awards – Best Visitor Experience ‘Wildlife Encounters’; Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award – Best Major Attraction; winner of the ‘Best Animal Welfare Initiative’ and overall winner of the World Responsible Tourism Awards.

Volunteers will be considered if they can speak English, are hard-working, fast-learning, enthusiastic and prepared to cheerfully fulfill tasks such as welcoming tourists at our entrance gate, informing visitors about our animals as they assist them to the reception, explain the basic rules regarding our sanctuaries (no touching, etc), assisting with caring for the primates, birds,
and other wildlife.

Highlights

  • Traveling: If flying in to South Africa it’s best to land in Cape Town and then get a bus (Translux, Greyhound or Intercape) in the morning (around 7am) which would mean that you reach Plettenberg Bay roughly at 2pm. Coming during the day is much easier as it gives you opportunity to go food shopping for your first week.
  • Volunteer Houses: Monkeyland and Birds of Eden have – 2 volunteer houses, each house is equipped with a kitchen, living room and bathroom. Each has has 1 twin bedroom for volunteers. It is free to stay in the houses; you just need to buy your own food and toiletries.
Bedding is provided but you can bring your own if you so choose.
Jukani does not have a volunteer house. All Jukani volunteers must stay at Homestay.
  • Volunteer duties (will vary ever so slightly from park to park): Welcoming visitors at the front gate and accompanying them to the reception,
instructing visitors about the rules of the sanctuary, taking tourists on 1hr safaris through the sanctuary whilst giving information about animals, daily cage cleaning and assisting with feeding, preparing food for the primates and birds, assisting with marketing for Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani, Forest maintenance (e.g. removing rubbish, cleaning the bridge etc)
  • General information:  You will get two days off per week. A normal work day lasts from 8am to 5pm.
All training will be provided once you get here.

Please note:
Monkeyland, Birds of Eden as well as Jukani are “hands off” sanctuaries meaning that we at no time actually have physical contact with the animals. If this rule is broken you will be asked to leave
immediately.
Special Note:
Volunteers who can commit to the project for a minimum of two months are more easily placed. Shorter stays are possible but will not have preference unless previously discussed with the volunteer coordinator in charge. If you are staying for less than 2 months – accommodation in our volunteer housing is then not available for you.
