Vermont work exchange in a retreat center

Metta Earth Institute is a small retreat center in Lincoln, Vermont (USA). The center offers retreats, trainings, programs, workshops, and consultations to in the field of yoga and meditation,
sustainable community life ways and wilderness awareness.

Program details

Work exchange opportunites are available year around in Metta Earth. When winter comes, most of the work is tending the farm animals, care-taking and beautifying the retreat center, and keeping everything gently humming.

  • feeding and bringing water to the animals
  • mucking out stalls
  • hand milking the cow, bottling the milk
  • collecting, washing, packaging eggs
  • making bread, cheeses, yogurt
  • preparing meals
  • stoking wood stoves
  • bringing in firewood
  • splitting, stacking wood
  • snow shoveling
  • carpentry projects
  • sewing or wool projects with organic, local fibers
  • indoor house painting
  • cleaning, making beauty
  • administrative work

Winter season starts in November and ends in the end of March.  In the winter you are asked for about 6 hours of work a day/5 days a week with the weekend open.

During the growing season from April until the end of October volunteer team expands to 5 to 7 and become much more active outside in the gardens, greenhouse, fields, and pastures.

  • gardening…soil preparation, planting, weeding
  • harvesting and food preservation
  • herbal tea gathering, drying, and mixing
  • moving animals in the daily pasture rotation
  • moving fences and the chicken wagons in rotation
  • bringing water to the animals
  • mucking out stalls after milking
  • hand milking the cow, bottling the milk
  • collecting, washing, packaging eggs
  • cleaning the chicken wagons, when needed
  • making bread, cheeses, yogurt
  • preparing, serving, cleaning up meals
  • carpentry projects, as skill determines
  • sewing or wool projects with organic, local fibers
  • cleaning, making beautyadministrative work

You will be asked for about 8 hours work a day/6 days a week with one day off, which is usually Sunday, but this day off is flexible

Free accommodation

Private, personal space in a room in the main Metta Earth house in the winter and a wall tent during the growing season.

Delicious, organic, local food made from fresh ingredients grown in the garden.

Free yoga practice

Yoga practice is available from 6:30 to 7:30am  every day and sitting meditation from  ó 7:30 to 8am in the Yoga Room.
