Program details

Working visit opportunity near MelbourneKadampa Meditation Centre Australia is the national centre for Kadampa Buddhism in Australia. Located an hour outside of Melbourne in the lush forest of the Dandenong Ranges, it is the perfect place for experiencing inner peace.

About the program

Working visits are a wonderful opportunity to spend time in our modern Buddhist community, and to deepen your experience of meditation and Buddhism in daily life.

Working visitors stay at the Buddhist temple – and in exchange for a week’s work, they receive meals, teachings, courses and accommodation for free.

What to expect

Kadampa Meditation Centre Australia is located an hour from the centre of Melbourne city, in the lush forest of the Dandenong Ranges. With its breath-taking views and natural wildlife, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind, and take a break from your usual activities.

During a working visit, the work is varied and could include cooking, gardening, office work, household jobs etc. There are also various building projects on the go at any one time that you could get involved in. The work, although not necessarily strenuous, tends to be mostly of a physical nature, so you will need to be reasonably fit and active to come on a working visit.

Working visits normally run from Sunday to Sunday for one week. Working visitors arrive for dinner on Sunday evening, and the working week starts at 9am (Monday). In a normal visit you will be required to work from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, with breaks for lunch and morning tea – about 28 hours in total. In the evenings you are welcome to attend any of the classes and meditations held at the centre.

On your days off (Saturday and Sunday) you will have the chance to explore the beautiful countryside and surrounding area or just relax in the friendly atmosphere of the centre. Any courses on the weekend of your visit you are welcome to attend, free of charge.

If you do not have your own car, public transport is available by train to Belgrave station, and then they will pick you up from there.

Food and accommodation

All meals are vegetarian including eggs and dairy products.

Comfortable dormitory accommodation is offered in an 6 or 8-person dormitory – all you need to do is bring a sleeping bag and towel, and if possible, work clothes and boots.

Please note: Since Kadampa Meditation Centre Australia is a Buddhist Centre, visitors are asked to abide by the Centre Rules, which are: no killing any living being (including insects); no stealing; no lying; no sexual misconduct; no taking drugs, alcohol or cigarettes; no playing of musical instruments, no listening to radios or watching television.
