Ireland volunteering and work exchange in a yoga retreat

Macalla Farm is a small, family run yoga retreat centre and working organic farm situated on Clare Island, off the west coast of Ireland. Yoga, mindfulness, food and horses are the main characteristics of this little heaven on Earth. Courses combining yoga and mindfulness with close interactions with horses, a variety of food courses, as well as a comprehensive yoga teacher training programme are available for visitors year around.

About the volunteer and work exchange program

Volunteers must be able to commit themselves for a minimum of three months though preference will be given to people who can come for longer periods from June.

In exchange for help with the running of the farm and the yoga centre, volunteers will receive all food and accommodation as well as practical tuition, providing a unique opportunity to gain first hand experience in one of these two areas.

People who have any of the following skills – eco-building, catering, working with children (especially in the area of nature and green education) are absolutely welcome to apply.

Areas of work

Organic food production

Work consists of helping in the garden and the polytunnels, providing a great opportunity to get practical experience with organic food production as well as becoming familiar with various approaches including permaculture and biodynamics. There may also be some work in the kitchen, preserving garden produce into jam, chutney, cordials, etc. Yoghurt and cheesemaking skills are also included here. On the farm, volunteers are asked to help with the milking of the sheep. You will also work closely with the head gardener to provide produce for the course and the Stone barn cafe.

Cooking and accommodation management

Work consists in helping out in the farm kitchen and in the Stone barn cafe, as well as engaging with guests staying at the farm, either on courses or on personal retreats, getting the houses ready for them and making sure their stay is a pleasant experience.
This is a great opportunity to learn vegetarian cooking, bread making, and various methods of food production and preserving and to gain some experience in the catering industry. This position may suit someone with an interest in yoga, as it is usually possible to take part in some of the yoga sessions when a course is running.

Please, be aware that working on a farm can be physically demanding and involves a lot of outdoor activity! More details about the program are available on this link!
