Northern Ireland farming volunteer program
Lackan Cottage Farm is a Permaculture LAND centre (learning and network demonstration), it welcomes visitors, run courses, seminars and open days where people can come to see practical examples of permaculture and sustainability in action.
Birch Cottage and the Off Grid Horse box – are self catering accommodation – offer people the opportunity to come and stay, whether simply for a relaxing break, or in conjunction with a course at Lackan. Birch Cottage is Tourism NI accredited – 4 star, we are a Green Tourism Gold rated property (one of few in Northern Ireland) and now it has just become the very first Green Key accredited business in Northern Ireland or Ireland. Green Key is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and their values are very much aligned with the the Lackham Cottage Farm philosophy.
About the work stay program
People who are truly interested in organic food production, sustainable living, self sufficiency or horses—and preferably all of the above!) and who are not afraid of working hard are the volunteers are encouraged to apply.
Prospective helpers should be aware that the work at the farm can be physically demanding (like carrying heavy things, digging the garden, or moving manure around in a wheel barrow), and usually involves spending a lot of time outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. If what you are looking for is a cheap holiday, or if you are the sort of person who will be looking at your watch, waiting for the time to knock off work, or who needs a very active nightlife, etc, this farm is not the place for you.
Note that the farm is strictly non smoking, so this volunteer opportunity is for non-smokers only.
- In exchange for your work comfortable accommodation is offered.*
- Free delicious organic food is available for volunteers.
- Free wifi (no film downloads pls.)**
* Accommodation is in a little caravan, which is well equipped and has it’s own kitchen, shower room, and heater, as well as power points. There’s plenty of time to read (volunteers can borrow books from the farm’s large library), write, or explore the area, but note that there is no TV.
** Wifi internet access is available, but the usage is capped so use it sensibly.
