Mount Madonna Center is a conference and retreat center located on 355 acres of mountain-top redwood forest and grassland overlooking Monterey Bay, between Santa Cruz and Monterey, in Northern California. It’s a community designed to nurture the creative arts and the health sciences within a context of personal and spiritual growth, inspired by Baba Hari Dass and sponsored by the Hanuman Fellowship, a group whose talents and interests are unified by the common practice of Yoga.
The center offers a supportive community atmosphere for relaxation, reflection, and a wide variety of learning experiences. Amenities include hiking trails, volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts, a pond for swimming, a hot tub, a gymnasium for volleyball and basketball, and bodywork at the Kaya Kalpa Wellness Center.

About the work exchange & volunteer program

Resident volunteers are needed the Mount Madonna community. There are various opportunities

  • in the kitchen,
  • dish room,
  • land management,
  • garden,
  • landscaping,
  • gate,
  • renovations,
  • dining room,
  • temple and maintenance (especially plumbers and general contractors).

Highlights

  • Experience is helpful, but most important is a willingness to learn!
  • Volunteers should be prepared to be involved with multiple areas.
  • Most volunteer positions are 2-3 months long with the possibility of extension.

The practice and culture of Karma Yoga remains the lifeblood of Mount Madonna Center. The community residents have responsibility for the growth, development, and maintenance of the Center. Whether you find yourself supporting program guests, serving dinner, getting your hands into the soil, painting, teaching in one of the community’s school classrooms, or maintaining the roads in the center, Karma Yoga is the spirit with which you’ll endeavor to meet your work/service commitments and responsibilities. Your work becomes practice when it is done with the intent to serve and in this way we develop positive qualities.

What’s in it for You?

  • Volunteers are expected to volunteer 27-28 hours per week in exchange for food and accommodations.
  • Each day at 10:00 am and 5:00 pm vegetarian meals are served to all residents. Bread, various spreads, fruit, and tea are available throughout the day.
  • Each resident is given a private room and then generally shares a bathroom and kitchen area.
  • The center offers community Yoga classes in person and online which includes meditation classes, asana classes, and the study of the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita.

COVID-19

Currently, Mount Madonna Center requires all staff (including volunteers) to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Mount Madonna Center is a multi-generational intentional space for people choosing a lifestyle of conscious self-development. A deep relational field fostered during the Center’s many decades of community life provides a familial space for those who find themselves here for any length of time.

Meals, classes, and common spaces are shared among residents and guests. Social life arises naturally from the founding principles of collaboration, service, practice, play, and devotion.
