Permaculture and sea turtle sanctuary volunteering, work exchange in Mexico

Playa Viva is a sustainable boutique hotel located on 200 acres of beach front property about 30-minutes south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It’s an environmentally-conscious resort located in rugged, unspoiled beauty of Mexico – off the grid. With a strong sense of place and community, Playa Viva immerses guests in nature and sustainability, whether it’s volunteering at the turtle sanctuary, touring and giving back to the local nearby communities, engaging in a workshop, supporting the hotel’s mangrove restoration efforts, or enjoying the garden-to-table dining – guests are sure to positively impact the health, environment, and economic development of the Playa Viva community.

About the work exchange & volunteering opportunities

  • Turtle Sanctuary help: Playa Viva has its own sea turtle sanctury. Volunteers can assist with daily work at the camp and help with fundraising/grant applications.
  • Community Development:  Volunteers are welcome to help out with the health, education and nutrition projects Playa Viva has. This can be adapted to your skills and interests. Opportunities include teaching English, leading art projects (murals or other community art projects), leading wellness activities, building school gardens or helping to organize the annual spay and neuter campaign.
  • Permaculture: This is an organic agriculture work exchange opportunity at the hotel farm where you’ll learn agroforestry techniques and permaculture design. Some experience required in farming and gardening, Spanish and community development.
  • Social Media, Communications and Fundraising Internship: Your help is neeeded mainly on the internet regarding the hotel’s social media accounts and creating content for the blog section on the webiste. You would also work with our Social and Environmental Impact Manager on fundraising initiatives such as applying for grants or researching other outside funding for the turtle sanctuary or community projects.

Playa Viva accepts up to five volunteers at a time. This is an immersive volunteer experience that requires a minimum commitment of three months with preference given to those who can stay longer. Please note that volunteers must be at least conversational in Spanish. Any previous experience in the field of permaculture, sustainable development, education, green building and sustainable design is a big plus.
